Both of my aunts are librarians. I could count on receiving books for presents every year.
While the rest of the family visited by the fire, I sat alone in the hallway devouring my new book.
I love to read just about anywhere. The beach. The airport. The hammock. The cupboard under the stairs. I always have a book in my bag so I can catch a few chapters at the kids’ dentist or while waiting for a tennis match to begin.
Aside from my Aunt Pat’s hallway on holidays, my favorite place to read as a kid was the bathtub. It still is today.
I know this sounds tricky. It’s all in the balance. I’ve only lost one book to the bathwater in 30 years of pruned reading.
My record is four hours. My average is two. Growing up in a household with only one bathroom, my favorite past time, though frequent, was not popular.
I got really good at ignoring my older brother banging on the bathroom door. (Sorry Charlie!)
Not only am I great at balancing my book above water, I am also talented at adding hot water with nothing but my toes. I hate it when the water gets cold so I frequently add more hot water. When the water level gets dangerously high and my balancing abilities become too challenged, I let out some cold water (again with my toes) before adding more hot water. This process gets repeated over and over.
When the hot water would finally give out or my hands got too pruned to safely hold my book, I would hop out of the tub and read wrapped up in a towel in front of the heat register behind the bathroom door. The banging on the door continued.
